What's the difference between edibles and smoking weed?

Edibles are processed through your digestive system — slower to kick in (30–90 minutes), longer lasting (4–8 hours), and more intense per milligram. Smoking or vaping hits in minutes and fades in 1–3 hours. The same amount of THC feels very different between the two.

How edibles work

When you eat a cannabis edible, THC is absorbed through the gut and processed by the liver, which converts it into 11-hydroxy-THC — a more potent compound than the delta-9 THC from smoking. This is why edibles feel stronger and last longer even at the same THC content. Onset is 30–90 minutes depending on your metabolism and whether you've eaten recently.

The timeline of a 10mg edible

0–30 min: likely nothing noticeable. 30–90 min: onset — mild effects begin. 2–3 hours: peak effects — this is when the experience is strongest. 3–6 hours: gradual decline. 6–8 hours: most effects resolved, possible mild residual drowsiness. Total experience varies significantly by individual.

Why it varies person to person

Metabolism, body weight, tolerance, whether you ate recently, and your individual endocannabinoid system all affect duration. Someone with no cannabis tolerance who takes 10mg on an empty stomach may feel effects for 8+ hours. A regular cannabis user might feel the same dose for 3–4 hours.
